“Remember how long you’ve been putting this off, how many extensions the gods gave you, and you didn’t use them. At some point you have to recognize what world it is that you belong to; what power rules it and from what source you spring; that there is a limit to the time assigned to you, and if you don’t use it to free yourself it will be gone and will never return.”

We all like to believe that we will live forever. Even though we know deep down very few contemplate their demise. And even those of us that do, other than knowing that our time is finite how many of us use the time we are given wisely. You either believe in God, and eternal being, or nature but whatever you believe you have to know that the time you are given is enough to accomplish what you need to do in this world.

There is an old Kenny Chesney song, “everyone wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to go now.” This song couldn’t be truer. If you believe in heaven, you know heaven is the place of beauty in the bible. It’s where happiness reigns and sadness is no more. Then why would we ever want to put this off? If you believe in nature, you know that everything goes the way it should. There is no external force guiding nature and you just go with the flow like the tide in the morning. Then, in that case, we shouldn’t fear death as it will be what it is. The reason we all are afraid to die is that deep down we feel we were built for more than where we currently are. We have more to offer our families, our jobs, or friends. We have a legacy to leave. The problem with this idea is we are constantly putting off things today for tomorrow. I see it every day. People want to be better in the gym but they do not have the dedication to stay late. Or we put work in front of the goals that will make us happy. People spend so much time trying to please a boss they don’t like in a job they don’t love. They put these things ahead of their interests and goals for someone else’s. If you have a goal, today is the day you need to take steps to achieve it. If you want to have a better snatch, then get in the gym and start lifting today. If you want a muscle-up, today is the day to start working on your drills. If you want to run in a marathon, then today is the day to start running. The time you are given is ample time to accomplish your goals. How do I know this? Because it has already been done. Steve Jobs didn’t create Apple overnight and he didn’t have the benefit of millions of dollars. He put in the work every day and stuck with it. He didn’t use the excuse “I don’t have time.” He went to work and started creating and demanding what was best for himself and stopped putting others ahead of his goals. I wake up every day at 4 am to make sure I get my runs in since my current goal is a 1/2 marathon. I can’t use the excuse I don’t have time. There is no time for excuses. The time I have been given in a 24 hour day is enough to accomplish anything that I truly want. Today is the day to start achieving your goals. Shut off Netflix, get off the couch, and get to work.

The time we have been given on this earth is sufficient to accomplish anything. It’s our priorities that need to change. We need to wake up earlier or go to bed sooner. We need to stop wasting time on our phones and start getting to work. We need to stop trying to please a boss who we don’t care about and stop putting their priorities ahead of our own. As a believer, I believe God has a plan for me but he won’t hand it to me. I have to work for it like any good parent makes their children do. If you do not believe in a higher power, nature has already set its course for you, now it’s time to take the time you have been given and get to work leaving your mark on this world. Today is the day, let’s get to work!
